Distractor Explanations

  • The group considers two longer titles before choosing Greener Cities.
  • A video and photograph are suggested before the group agrees on an audience poll.
  • Technical language is mentioned, but the report is rejected because its figures are out of date.
  • Leeds is closer, but Bristol is chosen because its data is more recent.
  • Maya offers to cover methods, but Daniel takes responsibility because he designed the survey summary.
  • Four colours, fifteen minutes, Friday, and Room 240 are all corrected later in the discussion.

Transcript

Maya: We need to finalise our seminar on urban green spaces. Have you thought about a title?

Aisha: I wrote down Parks and Public Health, although that may sound too narrow.

Daniel: What about Nature in Modern Towns?

Maya: That is clear, but Greener Cities sounds shorter and more memorable.

Aisha: I agree. Let's use Greener Cities as the title.

Daniel: How should we begin? I found a short video showing a crowded city street.

Maya: A video could take too much time. We could display a photograph instead.

Aisha: What if we ask the audience a quick question about how often they visit a park?

Daniel: An audience poll would involve everyone immediately. Let's begin with that.

Maya: Fine. After the poll, we need evidence. I downloaded a council report, but some sections are quite technical.

Daniel: The language can be simplified. The bigger problem is that the report was published nine years ago, so its figures are out of date.

Aisha: Then we should not use it. I found two newer case studies, one from Leeds and one from Bristol.

Maya: Leeds is closer to our college, which might make it seem relevant.

Daniel: True, but the Bristol study contains data from last year. The Leeds figures are five years old.

Aisha: Recent data will make our argument stronger, so let's choose Bristol.

Maya: Good. We also need someone to explain the research methods. I can do that if necessary.

Daniel: I designed the survey summary, so it would be easier for me to explain the methods.

Aisha: That makes sense. Daniel will cover the methods, and Maya can introduce the case study.

Daniel: What will you prepare, Aisha? You mentioned finding photographs.

Aisha: We already have enough images. I will prepare the charts for the results section instead.

Maya: Great. For the slides, I was thinking of using four colours to separate the sections.

Daniel: Four may look untidy. Could we use a maximum of three colours?

Aisha: Three will still separate the sections clearly. Let's agree on three.

Maya: Now we must check the timing. The seminar slot is fifteen minutes, right?

Daniel: Fifteen minutes includes three minutes for questions. Our complete seminar must therefore last twelve minutes.

Aisha: So each of us has about four minutes. We need one final practice as well. Is Friday afternoon possible?

Daniel: I have a laboratory class on Friday. Monday morning would work better for me.

Maya: Monday morning is fine. We can practise at ten in the library discussion room.

Aisha: Before we finish, which room has been booked for the real seminar? I wrote Room 240.

Daniel: That was on the first timetable. The department email confirms Room 204.

Maya: Room 204. I will correct it in our notes and send everyone the final schedule.

Mistake-Review Point

Listen for the reason attached to the final choice, especially after words such as "but", "instead", and "so".
