Distractor Explanations

  • The student mentions housing, but the assignment topic was urban transport.
  • The tutor says the structure is acceptable, but the strongest part is the examples.
  • The title is clear enough; the introduction needs a clearer argument.
  • The problem is not too few quotations. The student used too many.
  • The student suggests Friday, but the tutor says Thursday.
  • The library is too noisy, so the next meeting will be in the tutor's office.

Transcript

Tutor: Thanks for coming in, Daniel. I have read your assignment on urban transport.

Daniel: I was worried it sounded more like a housing essay because I mentioned apartment blocks in the first paragraph.

Tutor: That part is only background. Your main topic is clearly urban transport, so that is fine.

Daniel: Good. What did you think was the strongest part?

Tutor: The examples were the strongest part. Your structure is acceptable, but the examples from two cities made the essay more convincing.

Daniel: I thought the introduction was okay because the title was clear.

Tutor: The title is clear enough, but the introduction needs a clearer argument. At the moment, it describes the topic but does not say what you will prove.

Daniel: I can fix that. Should I add more quotations from the articles?

Tutor: Actually, you used too many quotations. Try to paraphrase more and only quote when the exact wording is important.

Daniel: Right. I used several websites. Is that enough?

Tutor: Websites are useful, but you should add one more academic source, such as a journal article or book chapter.

Daniel: I also wondered if the statistics section was too long.

Tutor: Keep the statistics section. The part you should shorten is the history section because it delays your main analysis.

Daniel: For the results, I was planning to add a long chart with all the survey numbers.

Tutor: A long chart would be hard to read. Use a simple table with only the most important numbers.

Daniel: What should I do with the conclusion? I mainly repeated my main points.

Tutor: You can briefly repeat them, but the conclusion should also mention future research.

Daniel: I can revise it by Friday.

Tutor: I need to check it before then, so please send the revised assignment on Thursday.

Daniel: Okay. Should we meet in the library again?

Tutor: The library is too noisy this week. Let's meet in my office after lunch.

Daniel: Thanks. I will revise the argument, reduce the quotations, and add the extra source.

Mistake-Review Point

In tutor feedback, listen for the final advice after polite comments. The tutor may praise one part, then correct another part.
